Meet Kiwi Family Travellers, the Longname Family

Updated: Apr 7

I'm Tanya, head creative and Mum of the Longname Family, a Kiwi travel family from the Winterless North, Northland, New Zealand.

Family is one of our core values, and we try to stay connected by creating opportunities to share time at home and abroad.

As a family, we've lived in Switzerland and Australia, each of which has positively impacted our lives, from incredible friendships to endless experiences. Our youngest was born in sunny Queensland, and Switzerland is an ancestral place for our family; therefore, these places will always have a special place in our hearts.

A fun fact about our family is that our three children were born six years apart and have a name that starts with an L. Their ages range from 21 to 9, which makes me feel old!

In recent years, we purchased a modest 1950s home in Northland. We renovated it from a tired, dated house to a much-loved and comfortable family home for ourselves and our two delightfully fluffy ragdoll cats, Sylvie and Silas.

Food is another way we stay connected as a family, and some of our favourite recipes we share are the traditional Swiss Raclette usually enjoyed on August 1st, the Swiss National Day, homemade pizza made in the outdoor pizza oven, Flammkuchen—anyone? and endless batches of chocolate brownies and celebration cakes. Food and baking have inspired our daughter to study patisserie and chocolate making in Europe, living a dream of learning from some of the best in the industry.

This past July, we visited our daughter and some of our favourite European destinations and explored many new ones. We had a wonderful time together, and travelling with children of varying ages had its challenges and some benefits. Check out our 5 Family Travel Tips to entertain the kids on holiday.

Until next time, Tanya x
